The Democratic Club of NW Volusia County, Meeting Minutes, June 25th, 2009

Call to Order: The meeting was held in the Community Room of the DeLand Police Station on Howry Avenue and was called to order by Steve Oxier, President, at 7:30 pm.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and the minutes of the May, 2009 were read.  A motion was made to approve the minutes, seconded and was unanimously approved.

President’s Report:   Steve Oxier presented the agenda for the meeting, and also presented a list of sub committees that need to be addressed by volunteer leaders within the club.  

Vice President’s Report:  Jeff Shepherd, based upon the reminder of the democratic state conference to be held in Orlando, suggested sponsoring 10 young democrat delegates (for a maximum total of $350.00) to attend the conference. Motion and second and unanimous approval of sponsorship of young democrat delegates.

Treasurer’s Report:   Judy Thompson reported that the club has $5646.96 as of June 23.
A motion was made to approve the treasurer’s report, seconded and was unanimously approved.
 

Speakers:     Michael E. Arth, currently running for Governor, discussed his ideas and possible solutions on several different issues; including the drug war, fair tax, homelessness, environmentalism.
Orange City Councilman and previous club president, Paul Rasch spoke about his experiences

Old Business:        An update on the health care reform was discussed.
Karen Zimmer announced the latest statistics for the petition drive regarding Florida Fair Redistricting. Florida Fair districts.com is confident that they will have the amount of petitions they need well before the deadline in order to have the initiative on the ballot in 2010.

New Business:      Steve Oxier discussed recertification of the club which is coming up and listed some changes that the recertification committee was recommending to our club.   All clubs have received an extension on the deadline for submitting the recertification packages because the Recertification Committee did not have all of the information to the club presidents soon enough for action to be taken.

Judy Thompson made a motion to change the term limits of the club president in the club’s bylaws to unlimited.
Motion was seconded and unanimously approved.

Steve Oxier mentioned that Kevin Winchell was getting married on June 27,  2009.
Steve Oxier discussed the Democratic Gathering coming up at Daytona Beach Convention Center.

The Democratic Women’s Club will have a luncheon at Cracker Creek in Port Orange, FL. Alex Sink will be attending, along with several other prominent Democrats. Tickets are $16.00, contact Judy Craig or Steve Oxier.

There being no further business or an announcement, the meeting was adjourned.
