Call to Order: The Meeting was held in the community room of the Deland Police Station on Howry Ave, and was called to order at 7:15 pm. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. The minutes for the December, 2009 meeting will be read during the February, 2010 meeting.
President's Report: Steve Oxier commended the President, Barack Obama for the 2010 State of the Union Address, commenting, "All hope may not be lost,".
Petition's for candidacy were distributed for Joyce Cusack, who is running for Volusia County Council. On April 1st, the Florida Democratic Party will decide upon recertification package submitted late last year.
Club Officers for our North West Club will be voted for during the March, 2010 meeting. Positions available are President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Treasurer, Parliamentarian, and 3 board members.
Any club member interested in holding one of these seats can contact Sylvia Perkins or Kevin Winchell for more information.
Steve Oxier notified the club that he will not be running for President this year.
Vice President's Report: Jeff Shepherd had no business to report.
Treasurer's Report: The Treasurer's Report was moved, and seconded to be approved.
Old Business: The Fair Districting initiative is on the ballot for the 2010 elections.
New Business: Massachusetts’s lost Kennedy’s Democratic Senate seat causing the Senate Democrats to lose their super majority. The Supreme Court made a decision allowing Corporations unlimited funding in political and issue advertising and support (not including political campaign contributions) which may even allow foreign corporations (with US ties) the same ability to influence elections.
Speakers:
Linda Meyers, intending to run against Charles Van Zant for House District 21,
asked for club participation in helping her in her campaign. She lost by 1% of
the votes needed last election. Her platforms may focus on our water supply,
forest conservation, and education.
Lieutenant Taft, of the Volusia County Fire Department, requested we contact and
pressure our county councilman to initiate a program that would allow fire
fighters to transport citizens to the hospital, which would eliminate the need
for EVAC to arrive on the scene, thus saving lives. He mentioned we were the
only county in our area that does not allow this.
Adjournment: There being no further business or an announcement, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully
submitted,
Hilliary Martin
Secretary, NWVDC
